If it is state aid...

Having established that State aid may well be an issue for you (by answering the 5 key questions), you need to know whether the aid you want to provide is covered under an existing approved scheme.

Has the European Commission approved the aid you wish to give?
There are various approved schemes in Scotland - and UK wide - which may be applicable to you.

If the aid you wish to give does not fall under an existing approval you need to obtain approval, contacting the State Aid Unit in the first instance.

This section of the website can help you:

  • find out about Scottish schemes already approved by the European Commission
  • get information about de minimis funding, small amounts of funding that the Commission does not consider to have an effect on competition
  • if you deal with Structural Funds and want to find out more about State aid implications
  • find out about notifying a new aid scheme to the Commission
  • find out what types of State aid the European Commission is likely to approve
