State Aid General Block Exemption Regulation :
What it means for Scottish Local Authorities

On 15 October 2008 the Scottish Government State Aid Unit held an exclusive event for Scottish Local Authorities on the new General Block Exemption Regulation (GBER).

The GBER seminar cascaded information on the scope which it offers to support investment, employment, training as well as new areas such as female entrepreneurship, environmental protection and risk capital.  The seminar also looked at the administrative requirements to provide aid under the Exemption.

Scottish Local Authorities had cover under the previous Block Exemptions enabling financial support to be given towards SME investment, property development, training and consultancy. This expires at the end of the year and to continue to offer such assistance, Local Authorities will need to renew their schemes
under the GBER and ensure new administrative requirements are implemented. The event provided an opportunity to discuss the action necessary to register and operate new schemes.
